WHO ARE YOU ?

My father is Danish and my mother is French. When I was a kid, I traveled throughout Europe with them, it was fantastic. Now an adult, I still have a taste for travels and stories. I once lived in Denver, Colorado, at the edge of the Rocky Mountains. Later I moved to Dublin, Ireland, and then to Singapore and New York City. Today, I live in Washington DC with my family and my two inquisitive cats.

Oh yes, I almost forgot to tell you: I am a very light sleeper, and have always been. No treatment was ever able to cure my insomnia, but I think that's for the best. With time, my sleepless nights have become very good friends. I even dare say that they are my muses!

WHAT HAVE YOU WRITTEN?

I am the author of 21 novels, 8 graphic novels and numerous short stories.

My first four books belong to The Strange Case of Jack Spark series, which won the most prestigious science fiction and fantasy award in France, the Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire, in 2010.

In the Animale series, I tried to reveal the untold stories hiding behind some of the most well-known yet mysterious fairy tales: Goldilocks and The Snow Queen... The first book won the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire in 2014.

In my series Phobos, currently being adapted into a TV series, I look towards the night sky filled with stars, and towards our future as a species forever attracted to other worlds—but at what price?

In my diptych on the future, I explore what in my eyes constitute the two greatest challenges of our species: on one hand the revolution of artificial intelligence in Cogito, on the other hand the climate emergency in Extincta.

Finally, through my most recent historical fantasy saga, Vampyria, I tackle in my own way a genre that I love: horror, and more precisely gothic horror.

As for the books to come... I have many ideas, and the sun is not out yet!

WHY DO YOU LIKE THE NIGHT?

Not only does the night give me the time I need to write, but she also offers me inspiration. Night time is dream time for the ones who fall asleep; night time is imagination time for the ones who stay awake—whether they read in their bed, or write at their desk. I truly believe that night shadows are not empty: they are full of things strange and beautiful, that books can reveal.
